WeWrite was created out of necessity.
I was previously involved in an alternative political wiki which was challenging the narratives of Wikipedia.
After a few successful years with the project growing to thousands of pages, I ran into some disagreements with my fellow admins on how the site should be moderated, so I stepped down from the project and started a completely new wiki to keep pushing my ideas.

Both of these wikis were basically impossible to monetize, which is why on WeWrite Every Page is a Fundraiser
Both wikis ran on MediaWiki, which is truly horrendous software, and a pain in the ass to manage.
I created WeWrite to solve the problem of MediaWiki, difficulty of monetization, as well as challenge the whole philosophy of existing social media, which is all about “posts” on “feeds” rather than an interconnected web of thoughts.
