When You Hear What Others Say About You

By

“Do not take to heart all the things that people say, lest you hear your servant cursing you. Your heart knows that many times you yourself have cursed others.” — Ecclesiastes 7:21-22

We all hear things that sting—words spoken behind our backs, assumptions made, or tone misunderstood. Solomon’s wisdom pierces through the noise: “Do not take to heart all the things that people say.” He isn’t telling us to ignore everyone, but to protect our heart from being ruled by every opinion.

There’s a kind of spiritual maturity that comes from learning not to react to everything. When we let every comment echo in our mind, we give others more power than they deserve. The Preacher reminds us that peace often begins with silence—choosing not to internalize every word that floats by.

Then comes the mirror: “Your heart knows that many times you yourself have cursed others.” That line humbles us. Before we nurse a grudge or rehearse the insult, Scripture asks us to remember that we’ve done the same. We’ve spoken in frustration, muttered judgments, or vented carelessly. The moment we recall our own failures, the edge of offense softens.

Grace changes how we hear. The gospel teaches that our standing isn’t based on the shifting opinions of others but on the steadfast love of God. When Christ bore the mockery of men and still forgave, He showed us what it means to live free from bitterness.

So when you hear something unkind—pause. Let humility and grace steady your heart. Remember how often God has covered your careless words. Instead of dwelling on what others said, dwell on the One who speaks a better word over you: “Beloved.”
