Midsommar will go down as one of the greatest horror films of the 21st century because the horror is multilayered. The true horror of Midsommar is the eternal quagmire of social isolation being the true catalyst of cult indoctrination. It’s almost prophetic that it was made and released pre-COVID era, when one considers the forced social isolation contributing to mental health crises induced psycho malleability. When an established institution fails to meet the needs of a population, many within that said population will willingly walk into the hands of nefarious actors, I.e. right wing pseudo populists such as Nick Fuentes and Trump capturing disenfranchised followers. In Midsommar, the protagonist loses her only family to a murder-suicide and the only support system she has left is her avoidant boyfriend who is already on the fence of breaking up with her joins the cult at the end of the movie because they are the only ones who have embraced her. Even if the warmth she received at the end was based on deception, it was the sense of community she craved because everyone else in her life failed her.
