Simony is the name of the sin of trying to purchase the church’s power as shown through Simon in Acts chapter eight; he sought to learn the ways of the church so that he could replicate it in a magical sense in order to make himself greatly known.
So many people of power in the "church" use a distortion of the gospel as their puppet to ultimately strive after wealth, recognition and self exhalation. The Christian religion should never serve a tool for a grasp at power yet somehow, this is exactly what is being done in many churches in America.
Endless men and women strive for fame and fortune through these platforms; they remove Christ from the equation and preach a false Gospel for the furthering of their "influence" - the lighter and more digestible the more commonly embraced and adopted. They utilize mysticism and money disguised as wisdom and charity to manipulate people away from Christ and toward the god of self.
