The Heiress They Buried

Chapter One — The Girl Without a Name

The night Elena Carter learned that her entire life was a lie, it was raining.

Not the gentle kind of rain that made people want to stay indoors with a cup of coffee.

It was violent.

Thunder shook the windows of her small apartment, while rain crashed against the glass like someone desperately trying to get inside.

Elena sat alone on the floor beside her grandmother’s old wooden chest.

Three days had passed since her grandmother’s funeral.

Three days since the only person she had ever called family was buried.

And three days since Elena had been trying to convince herself that everything would eventually feel normal again.

It didn’t.

Nothing felt normal anymore.

Her grandmother had left the chest behind.

For twenty-four years, she had forbidden Elena from opening it.

“When the time comes, you’ll know.”

Those had been her exact words.

Elena had always thought it was one of her grandmother’s strange habits.

Now she wasn’t so sure.

She lifted the lid.

Inside were old clothes, several letters, a silver bracelet, and a photograph wrapped carefully in a piece of white cloth.

Elena picked up the photograph.

Her breath stopped.

A young woman stared back at her.

She was beautiful.

Dark hair.

Elegant features.

Soft eyes.

But that wasn’t what frightened Elena.

It was the little girl standing beside the woman.

The child looked exactly like her.

Same eyes.

Same nose.

Same small birthmark beneath the left eye.

Elena turned the photograph over.

Six words had been written on the back.

She is not Elena Carter.

Her fingers went cold.

She read it again.

Then again.

A nervous laugh escaped her lips.

“This isn’t funny.”

She looked around the empty apartment.

Of course nobody answered.

Her grandmother was dead.

There was nobody left to explain what the message meant.

Elena turned the photograph over again.

The young woman was wearing a large diamond ring.

The child wore a tiny silver necklace.

Elena immediately touched her own neck.

She had worn that necklace since she was a baby.

Her grandmother had always told her never to remove it.

Elena pulled it forward.

For the first time, she noticed the tiny symbol engraved on the back.

A rose.

Beneath it were three letters.

R.R.

Her heartbeat accelerated.

She reached for her laptop.

“Okay,” she whispered. “Let’s find out who you are.”

She photographed the picture and began searching.

At first, nothing appeared.

Then she searched the initials.

R.R.

Rosewood.

Her screen filled with results.

Elena clicked the first article.

THE ROSEWOOD DYNASTY: THE FAMILY BEHIND ONE OF THE COUNTRY’S LARGEST BUSINESS EMPIRES.

She stared.

The Rosewoods were unbelievably wealthy.

Hotels.

Real estate.

Technology.

Private hospitals.

Luxury resorts.

The family name appeared everywhere.

But Elena wasn’t interested in their businesses.

She was interested in their history.

She kept scrolling.

Then she saw a headline.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS LATER: THE MYSTERY OF THE MISSING ROSEWOOD HEIRESS REMAINS UNSOLVED.

Elena froze.

She clicked.

A photograph appeared.

The young woman from her grandmother’s picture.

Underneath it was a name.

Sophia Rosewood.

Elena’s eyes moved down the page.

Sophia had been the only daughter of billionaire Alexander Rosewood.

She had married a man named Daniel Carter.

They had one daughter.

Amelia Rosewood.

The child disappeared when she was three years old.

A fire had destroyed part of the Rosewood estate.

Sophia and Daniel were found dead.

Their daughter was never found.

The family had searched for years.

Eventually, Amelia was presumed dead.

Elena stopped reading.

Her hands were trembling.

Daniel Carter.

Her supposed surname.

Carter.

She swallowed.

“No.”

She continued reading.

The article said the little girl had been wearing a silver necklace on the night she disappeared.

Elena slowly removed the necklace from her neck.

Her eyes filled with tears.

There was no way.

There couldn’t be.

She read the final paragraph.

Despite numerous investigations, no remains belonging to Amelia Rosewood were ever discovered. Her disappearance remains one of the country’s most famous unsolved family mysteries.

Elena pushed the laptop away.

She couldn’t breathe.

If the article was true…

If the photograph was real…

Then her entire childhood had been fabricated.

She had never been Elena Carter.

She had been Amelia Rosewood.

The missing heiress.

A knock suddenly sounded at the door.

Elena jumped.

She stared toward the entrance.

Another knock.

Three slow knocks.

“Who is it?”

Silence.

She stood.

Her instincts told her not to open the door.

Then a man’s voice came from the other side.

“Ms. Carter?”

Elena didn’t answer.

“Please open the door.”

“Who are you?”

“I’m here because of your grandmother.”

Elena’s heart pounded.

“What do you want?”

“I need to give you something.”

“What?”

Silence.

Then the man said something that made every hair on Elena’s body rise.

“I know who you really are.”

She stepped backward.

The photograph slipped from her fingers.

The man knocked again.

“Amelia.”

Elena covered her mouth.

Nobody had called her that.

Ever.

The man knew.

Someone knew.

She grabbed her phone and moved toward the bedroom.

Then the lights went out.

The apartment fell completely dark.

Elena froze.

Outside, thunder roared.

She heard the front door handle move.

Someone was trying to get inside.

She ran.

She grabbed her handbag, rushed toward the bedroom window, and climbed onto the small balcony.

Behind her, the front door crashed open.

“Find her!”

A man’s voice.

Another voice answered.

“Check the bedroom!”

Elena’s blood turned cold.

They weren’t here to talk.

They were hunting her.

She climbed over the balcony railing and dropped onto the fire escape.

Rain soaked her clothes instantly.

She ran down the metal stairs without looking back.

By the time she reached the street, she was shaking.

She didn’t know where she was going.

She only knew one thing.

Someone had spent twenty-five years hiding her identity.

And now that she had discovered the truth…

They were willing to kill her to keep it hidden.

Elena ran into the darkness.

Behind her, the apartment building disappeared into the rain.

And inside that apartment, the photograph remained on the floor.

The young woman in the picture smiled innocently.

But beneath her image, another message had been written.

One Elena had not yet discovered.

If she ever remembers the night of the fire, they will come for her.
